A group exhibition featuring the works of Michele Caplan, Janice Ferro, Leslie Fenn Gershon, and Rhonda Tawil. These four artists are examining the connection between color and emotion and responding to the message.

Color has been known to have many psychological effects on the human psyche and can elicit emotional reactions. Cool colors such as blue are often associated with the elements of water and sky and can bring about serene feelings. Green is linked to nature and to the tranquil effects that trees and green grass have upon the soul. The color purple is thought to awaken creativity and the imagination. And orange is a strong and energetic color that expresses vitality. Red is a warm, vibrant hue and is connected to intense emotions such as love, and passion. The color yellow is associated with the sun and therefore yellow is warming, revitalizing, and evokes joy.

Michele Caplan says that “color is like ringing a bell, it is hard not to respond. Color is simultaneously emotion and abstraction.” Janice Ferro comments “that a color dialogue will start to take place with each brushstroke of hue, and the colors that are chosen begin to tell a story.” Leslie Fenn Gershon explains, “that she will often abstract the natural colors to bring a fresh and new perspective to her land and waterscapes.” Rhonda Tawil states, “that color and the combined colors are the most important element in her paintings.”

In “Color Speaks: Exploring the Language of Color” we consider how color is a powerful tool that an artist will use to express their ideas and emotions, and to speak to the viewer.
